Court and Spark is the sixth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell. It was an immediate commercial and critical success-and remains her most successful album. Released in January 1974, it has been described as pop, but also infuses Mitchell's folk rock style, which she had developed through her previous five albums, with jazz inflections, to produce a style more akin to jazz fusion.

Joni Mitchell, David Crosby and Graham Nash (on Free Man In Paris), Susan Webb and David Crosby (on Down To You), Cheech and Chong (on Twisted) Electric Guitar - Wayne Perkins (on Car On A Hill), Dennis Budimir (on Trouble Child); Robbie Robertson (on Raised on Robbery), Jose Feliciano and Larry Carlton (on Free. Man in Paris), Larry Carlton on all others

Court and Spark is a truly special album. Joni Mitchell proves herself quite handily with its contents. This is one of the reasons why many label her as the female Bob Dylan. I can’t recommend Court and Spark too highly. Every element of the album can’t help but impress. Check it out, and I’m sure you’ll find something you can appreciate. And hey, even if you don’t, look at it this way: you now know a little more about Saskatoon Saskatchewan, it’s many nicknames, and one of it’s most important residents. and John Robinson Penelope.

Court and Spark sits halfway between Joni Mitchell’s folkie past and her jazz-rock future. Yet the album is no mere transitional affair-not by a long shot. On Help Me and Just Like This Train, she displays a master’s touch, weaving romantic insecurities into arrangements that, decades later, haven’t surrendered their sophistication. The versatile singer/songwriter also finds the time to cut loose, which she does in typically elegant fashion on the wah-wah rocker Raised on Robbery. Try not listening to this album a dozen times in a row. Court and Spark Joni Mitchell.

i am surprised that there are no user reviews of this lp. this is truly Joni's best & most commercial lp, a perfect blend here of pop, folk & light jazz, even a little rock (Raised on Robbery). the collection of excellent songs here rival other blockbusters such as Rumours and the later Beatles lps.

It's hard to put into words the billiance and influence this album has had on many people, myself included. 5 stars is underrating this masterpiece from Joni which has stood the test of time. Her intelligent, sensitive and insightful approach to acquiring emotional wisdom through love, loss, confusion and regaining ground. Every song is perfectly crafted with meaning and lessons learned. Sometimes overlooked (this album) where critics say Blue was her benchmark. Court & Spark is just as good if not better. Groundbreaking in pop music culture.

A stunner from beginning to end, Joni had by now mastered the art of writing songs that were both thoughtful and personal but channelling the music into an accessible well produced sound that incorporates both her distinctive guitar and piano work with the jazzy chops of the great backing musicians. Every track works from the ominous title opener to the anthemic single Help Me, the beautiful Down To You with it's gorgeous string arrangements the rocking, funny Raised On Robbery and even the comedic version of Twisted that closes the album doesn't come off as too throwaway or silly because of Joni's convincing delivery and the cool trumpet soloing. Quite simply, it's a masterpiece and a true pinnacle of her career.

I agree with Art, and because it's a recent post I thought I'd follow up. Far and away my favorite Joni Mitchell album, and I am a fan. I was listening to an album by Esperanza Spalding. It reminded me not only of Court and Spark, but how innovative and wonderful is was and is. Listening to it now on Amazon Prime. Top 10 all time.

Joni's commercial breakthrough didn't mean any compromise of her unique and prodigious gifts. From the painful to the jazzy to a novelty tune, this pop classic has it all. Ballads COURT AND SPARK, SAME SITUATION, and DOWN TO YOU combine with upbeat hit FREE MAN IN PARIS and a really rocking RAISED ON ROBBERY into a miraculous mosaic of Los Angeles in the early 70s that still resonates. Fun fact: the party Joni describes in PEOPLE'S PARTIES is elaborated on in Anjelica Huston's autobiography WATCH ME (Anjelica was also there with all the major players of that period). COURT AND SPARK remains a seminal, necessary, and nostalgic vision of a period long gone...and greatly missed.

Magnificent... one of my all time favorite albums, I think I like it more than Blue!!!p.s. I love Blue
  • Vozilkree
Joni Mitchell at her best and commercially viable to boot. The production value and sophistication of arrangements is unprecedented for 1974. This is one of the underrated albums of that decade. A top 100 of all time. No doubt.
  • Cordabor
Joni's best, next to "Blue". And yet so very different. "The Hissing ..." and "Hejira" come very close in brillance but are less accessible (except for the Mitchell-connaisseurs bien-sûr) . Add "Mingus" and you have the 5 Joni Mitchell albums everybody should own.
  • Braendo
Mitchell's most mature, fully realized album. Tom Scott's backing band is the perfect complement to these songs, written when Mitchell was at the height of her powers and her vision was at its clearest. While some of her earlier work could seem precious or ponderous, here she displays a lyricism that delineates a worldview that, while still bathed in romanticism and uncertainty, is direct and often unsparing without becoming bitter or cynical. Simply a great album.
