Mitsuko Shirai is an honorary member of the Robert Schumann Society of Zwickau and received the 1982 Robert Schumann Prize of the City of Zwickau. With Hartmut Höll, she was given the rare honor of Carte blanche at the Auditorium du Louvre, Paris, in 1993. In 1996, a Japanese jury presented her with the Idemitsu Music Award in recognition of her artistic achievements, followed in 1997 by the ABC International Music Award. As a professor in Karlsruhe, Mitsuko Shirai focuses on lieder in classes co-directed by Hartmut Höll. She has long served as a visiting professor in Salzburg, given lieder masterclasses with Hartmut Höll in Finland, at the International Music Seminar in Weimar, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Summer Academy of the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and in the USA – The University of Cincinnati of Music, Tanglewood, and others - as well as in Jerusalem.
