Andsnes' performance of the D. 958 C minor Piano Sonata is truly captivating, making him a worthy successor to the masterful Schubert recordings made by Alfred Brendel. With equally matched musical and technical skills, Andsnes' Schubert is simply pristine

Composed By – Franz Schubert. Piano – Leif Ove Andsnes.

Leif Ove Andsnes here deals beautifully with the Sonata itself. Andsnes's performance is smooth and warmly expressive, with the final tarantella going at a galloping lick.

The C minor sonata (D. 958) interpretation is nothing short of revelatory. Andsnes paints a richly varied tonal soundscape by masterfully and subtly inflecting Schubert's trademark repeated left-hand chordal motifs, while maintaining a singing, lyrical line in the right hand. The level of technical execution is outstanding, and the EMI engineers have succeeded in capturing Andsnes' limpid tone with a reference-quality recording. Amongst distinguished renditions of this sonata by Brendel, Kempff, Perahia, Pollini, Uchida, and now Andsnes, this version ranks now as my first choice.

com This CD presents Schubert's C minor Sonata, the first of his final three works in that form. Description: B B This CD presents Schubert's C minor Sonata, the first of his final three works in that form. It is a highly dramatic work, with more theatricality than introspection, particularly in the first and last movements, and the minuet is more of a Romantic outpouring than what we normally expect from a minuet. Four songs are sung by Ian Bostridge with his usual insights. Of special interest are six fragments that Schubert never completed –- three for solo piano, three of songs –- that break off in mid point.
